A Year in Review and One Word to Define 2020

A Year in Review and One Word to Define 2020

Rattlers Family,

As we look back on 2019, we do so with full hearts. What a year it has been for the Rattlers. Each year becomes brighter with you all, and we look back on many fond memories and experiences with the Rattlers community. Meta cognition (reflection) and gratitude continue to be important aspects of my daily routine, and there are too many positive memories to put on paper. Here are a few memories that will stick with me forever. Each memory contains a small nugget or quote that encompasses each experience.

1. Laxcon 2019: Last January, Coach Cooper (our girls director) and I journeyed to Pennsylvania to learn from some of the brightest minds in lacrosse. We met new people, forged new relationships, and acquired new and valuable knowledge. Most importantly, the trip reinforced how valuable Coach Cooper is to our organization, and her passion for the game. She instills this passion in our girls every season, and teaches them how to be great people. I am continually grateful for her immense contributions and commitment to the club. Thanks for all you do, Sarah!

Nugget: Coach Danowski (Duke), one of my favorite coaches of all time, presented on his journey to winning the World Championship with Team USA. His message to the team was not "we are here to win a championship". Instead, it was "who do we want to be on our last day?" I have adopted this idea with my high school team, and it has proven to be a valuable part of our team culture.

2. Spring Volunteer Projects: To me, this work transcends anything we achieved on the lacrosse field this spring. Each team came up with a volunteer project, and the results were incredible. Rattlers teams worked with Broomfield FISH, Community Foodshare, Special Olympics, Boulder Humane Society, Colorado Parks and Wildlife, Broomfield Friends, multiple Elementary schools, and picked up trash in many local areas. We are so proud of our players for giving back and buying into being part of something bigger than themselves. Much more of this to come!

Nugget: "your greatness is not what you have, it's what you give."

3. Costa Rica with Student Cultural Exchange: In August, Coach Hughes, myself, and  eight rising ninth graders embarked on a trip that we will never forget. We traveled to Samara, Costa Rica where we had the time of our lives. We taught lacrosse to less fortunate elementary students, painted a school, surfed, played lacrosse on the beach and in tropical rain, ziplined, and more. The trip gave us a new outlook on life, and we couldn't have asked for a better group.

Nugget: "Sport has the power to change the world. It has the power to inspire. It has a way to unite people that little else does." -Nelson Mandela

4. Rattlers vs. Cancer: This fall, we played for the many members of the Rattlers FAMILY battling cancer in 2019 and previous years. The event was designed to not only help affected families financially, but most of all to give them hope. Our FAMILY responded with over 40 players in attendance, and over $2,300 raised. It was incredible to watch the players play for a greater purpose. The determination and courage of these families inspire us to be more determined and courageous ourselves. Thank you to everyone who made this event a success.

Nugget: "Tough times don't last, tough people do."

The list goes on. Thank you for an incredible 2019!

With all being said, 2020 is underway! A new year comes with new inspiration, new friends, and new opportunities. Each year, instead of making a long list of resolutions, I pick one word that is going to define my year. It's the word that inspires and leads me, and will also be the word that I fall back on when times are tough.

My one word this year is, Influence. This word holds significant weight in my life, and will be my North Star for 2020. I have always believed that leadership is not about your authority or title, but about the positive influence you have on others. My mission for 2020 is to positively influence as many people as possible through lacrosse, leadership, and FAMILY.

I encourage all of our players and family members to pick a word that inspires you. Something to live by. Something to fall back on. Something to guide you. What will your one word be?

Here's to many more years of lacrosse and FAMILY with you all. Happy New Year!

Best,

-Coach LaHoda
